Direction of buttonholes

If you are having to create buttonholes on a garment be sure you know the correct direction they should ‘lie’. You should consider where the greatest point of stress on the button is going to be. This means the buttonholes will need to be made parallel (vertically) to the edge on the front of a shirt or blouse. [Quite often the first button, however, is made horizontally as the strain on the garment is different at this point.]

For example a buttonhole should be placed on 1.5 cm above or below the bustline and the same on the waistline to stop the garment gaping and pulling at this particular point.
