Top tip – clipping and notching curved seams
Mrs Bowden’s top tip – curved seam allowance
Untold monkey business can occur when dealing with curved seams. If you try and press the curved seam allowances to one side you may have too much fabric and the seam will not lie flat – making it look very unsightly.
To remedy this you need to clip or notch the seam.
Clipping
– to ease fabric which is pulling on a seam.
Notching
– to take away excess fabric
When you are clipping or notching make sure you leave 2 mm of fabric next to the stitching line – this will prevent you from ‘popping’ the stitches.
The general rule of thumb is that clipping and notching is closer together as the stitching line gets curvier.
