Mrs Bowden’s top tip – creating buttonholes

Mrs Bowden’s top tip – a few snippets of wisdom about creating buttohnoles.
As many of you may know I am partial to a button-through dress and have many different styles.  It has struck me that creating buttonholes causes a little bit of anxiety for some sewers so I thought this week I would give you a few tips on creating them.
First tip; if you don’t use your machine very often to create buttonholes you can easily forget the direction the machine follows when making them.  Get a piece of scrap fabric, create a buttonhole then write on the fabric the order of the steps.  Keep this in your accessories box or on a display board as a quick reminder of the direction.
Second tip; when slashing the buttonhole pop a pin at the end.  This will prevent you from shearing through the bartack and ruining your buttonhole.
Third tip; you may have a machine with a buttonhole foot that calculates the size required for you.  However, you may not OR the button you wish to use may exceed the size that fits into the foot.  If this is the case, measure the diameter of your button and add 2 mm to determine the length of the buttonhole.  If you are using a particularly thick button or one with a shank add 3 or 4 mm instead.  It is always a good idea to create a sample buttonhole and slash through to make sure the button actually fits before making them on your garment.
Mr Tom inspecting my buttonholes!  Have a splendid week.

Until next time,

in stitches,

Mrs Bowden x
