Mrs Bowden’s top time saving tips

First of all Happy New Year to you and thank you for subscribing to my blog/tip/sewingnatter thing…..

Let’s face it – life can sometimes get in the way of our sewing time. We are all pretty busy and occasionally our hobbies are pushed to the back burner.  Here are a few tips I use to maximise my sewing time.

Use a double thread when sewing on buttons – it’s surprising how much times this saves.
Tacking can be done on the sewing machine.  Change the colour of the thread so it stands out and makes it easier to see for removing later on.  Set the stitch length to the longest length on your machine, don’t backstitch and stitch away.  This is particularly helpful if you are preparing a garment for fitting.  I would still tack a sleeve in by hand as negotiating the pins around the sleeve head on a sewing machine can be a bit tricky!  You can see in the picture both types of tacking.
When I am making a garment with lots of darts I will prepare all the darts and sew them in one go.  This speeds up the process considerably.  You can apply the same technique by getting all your stay stitching done in one go,  all your gathering done in one go etc etc.
Mark the wrong side of your fabric on all the pieces at the start of making if you have a fabric that doesn’t have an obvous ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ side.
Use an arm’s length of thread when sewing by hand.  It’s amazing how quickly thread get’s used and having plenty to start with allows more rythmical, speedier sewing.
